VNIIFTRI of Rosstandart took part in the revision of international standards

17 June 2024

Moscow Region, June 17 – Scientists from the Russian Metrological Institute of Technical Physics and Radio Engineering (VNIIFTRI) of Rosstandart took part in the meeting of the working group of the ISO Technical Committee* "Testing the metals" on the revision of international standards for the Brinell hardness measurement method ISO 6506-1,2,3. International standards 6506 series are widely used in mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, automotive and aircraft manufacturing industries, metallurgy, construction, as well as scientific research.

"VNIIFTRI is the head metrological institute of the Rosstandart system in the field of ensuring the uniformity of hardness measurements. Participation in the ISO Technical Committee for the development of standards in the field of hardness testing allows us to successfully modify international standards for their application in Russia," noted Andrey Aslanyan, Head of Laboratory 360 at FSUE “VNIIFTRI”.

At the meeting of the working group, changes and additions to the ISO 6506-1 standards (Test method, ISO 6506-2 (Brinell hardness testers. Verification and calibration of hardness testers), ISO 6506-3 (Calibration of hardness standards). The procedure for determining the average diameter of the print has been clarified. In the new version of the standard, for prints where the diameter of the print measured in the horizontal direction differs from the diameter of the print measured in the vertical direction by more than 1% of the tip diameter, the number of measurements of the print diameters has been increased and the directions of measurements of the print diameters have been clarified. This proposal was adopted in order to reduce the effect of the roughness of the sample surface on the measurement results.

The improved standards will be put into effect in 2024-2025.

Brinell measurement is a method for determining the hardness of metal, the essence of which is to press a steel or carbide ball tip into the material, followed by measuring the diameter of the print obtained after removing the load.

Hardness is measured using a hardness tester applying a maximum force of 29.421 kilonewtons (kN) to the tip.

The Brinell method measures the hardness of materials such as steel, cast iron (except white), copper, soft alloys, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
